More than half of the voters (53 percent) continues to sympathize with the government parties, according to a personal opinion poll including 5000 people conducted by the Nézőpont Institute in June, following the EP elections.
The balance of power between opposition parties was redefined by the EP elections, which shows that there is a need for a new opposition in Hungary.
Even after the European Parliament elections, the Fidesz-KDNP party alliance is comfortably leading the party’s popularity list. Fidesz-KDNP stands for 53 percent among those who promise election participation. The Democratic Coalition (DK) – which is currently holding the title of the strongest opposition party – stands at 12 percent among the politically active ones, thus their dynamism continued after the EP elections, although they could not repeat their previously reached result of 16 percent. Beside their second position, the disadvantage of Ferenc Gyurcsány’s party is significant compared to the Fidesz-KDNP, with a camp less than quarter size of the Fidesz-KDNP’s.
The Momentum Movement which received two seats in the EP elections, is still in the third place with its 10 percent result, while the Movement for a Better Hungary (Jobbik) enjoys 8 percent of voters’ support, thus their results are close to the May elections. The support of the MSZP-Dialogue alliance (MSZP-P) (6 percent) is currently at a low point, and in the competition to win left-wing voters’ confidence they are losing ground to Ferenc Gyurcsány’s party. The surprising result of the European Parliament elections – that the Democratic Coalition (DK) is stronger than the MSZP-Dialogue (MSZP-Dialogue alliance) – still exists.
The general state of opposition parties is much more evident by the fact that the support of the HungarianTwo-Tailed Dog Party (MKKP) reaches the electoral threshold of 5 percent among decided voters, is indicating that there is still an urge to change opposition parties in Hungary. The Politics Can Be Different (LMP) – which was wandering around electoral threshold – stands at 3, the Our Country Movement (Mi Hazánk Mozgalom) at 2 percent.
Within the total population Fidesz-KDNP has 41, Democratic Coalition (DK) has 8, the Momentum Movement (Momentum) and the Movement for a Better Hungary (Jobbik) have a 7-7, MSZP-P (MSZP-Dialogue alliance), MKKP (HungarianTwo-Tailed Dog Party) and Politics Can Be Different (LMP) have 3-3-3, while the Our Country Movement (Mi Hazánk Mozgalom) is enjoying a 2 percent support.
Methodology
The survey of the Nézőpont Institute from May 31, 2019 to June 26, 2019, was carried out with personal interviews including 5000 people. The sample is representative regarding the population over 18 years of age by gender, age, region, type of settlement and educational level. With a sample size of 5,000 and a confidence level of 95 percent, the sampling error is 1.4 percent.
